AMD Ryzen 7 4800U Offers Lower TDP While Beating Intel Core i9-9880H

Leaked benchmarks show AMD Ryzen 7 4800U  beating Intel Core i9-9880H in Fire Strike physics score while offering a lower TDP.

Taken from Notebookcheck … An AMD Ryzen 7 4800U has been found on 3DMark’s Fire Strike benchmark racking up a terrific Physics Score. The Ryzen 4000 APU managed 18,588 points, which is higher than the median score that we have achieved with devices sporting an Intel Core i9-9880H. However, the Intel chip can utilize a higher power draw than the new Renoir processor from AMD.

There are many benchmarks now that seem to be confirming AMD’s Ryzen 4000 APUs are a force to be reckoned with. The latest result, which was spotted by Tum Apisak, is for a Ryzen 7 4800U part that was powering a system with RAM @4266 MHz, which was going through 3DMark’s well-known Fire Strike application. The Physics Score, which is influenced by the performance of the CPU, was a very respectable 18,588 points.

The AMD Ryzen 7 4800U can count on 8 cores and 16 threads for processing, and it utilizes a default TDP of 15 W that can be configured from 10 W to 25 W by a laptop OEM. The Coffee Lake Intel Core i9-9880H also has 8 cores and 16 threads to rely on, but it can fall back on a much higher TDP of 45 W. However, in our tests of devices that featured the Intel chip, the median score ended up being 17,729 points.

There were systems with the i9-9880H that did particularly well in the Fire Strike Physics Score: The MSI GE65 Raider 9SF-049US we tested managed a great score of 19,971. However, other review devices with the i9-9880H, such as the Apple MacBook Pro 16 2019 i9 5500M, floundered in this particular benchmark. Considering the discrepancy in TDP, it is an outstanding result for the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U.

Unsurprisingly, the 7nm Ryzen 7 4800U completely clobbered the 10nm Intel Core i7-1065G7, even though it is a bit of an unfair fight against the fellow 15 W chip. The Intel part only has 4 cores and 8 threads, and it recorded a median score of 11,097 in Fire Strike (Physics). It’s up to the Core i7-10875H now to wreck the Ryzen 4000 APU’s parade, although that Intel part also has a TDP of 45 W (configurable down to 35 W).
